The Michael Cameron Dempsey Fund made its most significant financial investment in two years of existence by helping the Little Traverse Conservancy acquire land in 2015 for a new nature preserve near Harbor Springs, Michigan. The property adjoins LTC’s Menonaqua Woods preserve and is near its Martha Cavanaugh Cameron Nature Preserve on M-119 north of LTC’s office. The site will be named in Michael’s honor. He enjoyed many family trips to northwestern lower Michigan, loved aiding in the conservation and protection of his native State’s natural resources, and was particularly drawn to spaces off the beaten path. The nearby Little Traverse Wheelway provides a connection to biking, which he did with such energy and strength. The Harbor Springs airport to the north represents another link to Michael’s life; he made his first licensed drive to Metro Airport in 1996, traveled via aircraft to many lands and overseas work locations, and achieved a personal goal by taking flying lessons in the summer of 2013. This parcel is not accessible except through LTC’s adjacent Menonaqua preserve and thus will be maintained in its natural state. Those features will be discussed in a forthcoming story.
The Conservancy and Michael’s family are in the process of designing appropriate signage to denote the Preserve and connect the site to Michael’s legacy and memory.
